A Heated Debate

Hey gang,

don't know if you've heard, but there is a rising debate over a new book by Rob Bell. For those of you who don't know who Rob Bell is, he is a pastor and creator of some very dynamic teaching videos. From the inception of these videos Bell has seemingly taken heat for his progressive and unorthodox presentation of scripture. The following two links will inform you of what is going on. Basically the debate regards Bell's "universalistic" theology, poising himself with the teaching that hell is fairly (if not entirely) empty.

I am sharing this video and article with you so that you may 1) be informed, and 2) recognize the importance of knowing scripture so that influential and popular teachers may not falsely lead you in heresy and false representations of God.

One More Word on Purity

A Wall or Door

If she is a wall,

we will build on her a battlement of silver,

but if she is a door,

we will enclose her with boards of cedar.

(Song of Solomon 8:9 ESV)

This is one of my favorite verses, and I cannot believe I did not use it in our message, nevertheless, here's what the brothers of Soloman's bride are saying...

The brothers liken their sister to one of two images that tell the tale of her purity. First of which is a wall, the second, a door. Notice their responses relative to which she might be.

If she is a wall they choose to "build on her a battlement of silver." This served as two functions. One, it further fortified her and made her stronger. Secondly, this was an act of adorning; adding dignity, strength, and beauty where one might expect to find it. Silver is highly reflective and catches the eye. This would draw attention, but due to the nature of its purpose would hold a reality of respect and grandeur, surely something to be taken seriously.

If she were a "door" effectually not guarding herself to the advances, or attacks, of suiters they would choose to "enclose her with boards of cedar," making her into a wall. This is vitally important to understand. Not only was it seen and understood that a woman was to care for, ensure, protect, and cultivate her purity, but men close to her were to embrace this as well. Her brothers made it their business, took on the responsibility, and acted upon the assurance, protection, and growth of her purity. There are far too many "boys" parading around as "men" that claim to have a woman's best interest in mind, yet at the first opportunity they either turn the guns (typically with a justification like, "i love you") or they fail in their own strength and compromise a woman's purity because they do not have a healthy understanding or respect for personal purity, let alone the purity of a woman.

The nature and imagery of a woman keeping herself as a wall or door is far more than just her own responsibility. It is as much her responsibility as it is her fathers, her brothers, and her brother's in Christ's responsibility!

if men would “man-up” be responsible, take a stand, quit being scared little effeminate girly men, and fight for the well being of there: friends, girlfriends/wives, community, church, and ultimately their God! - not only would women be more inclined and readily respect them, they’d find these “once boys” more attractive…and the affections of a woman have proven over history to be incredibly life altering and revolutionary in the hearts of men. But it all starts with the man! MAN UP!

Jesus took a few men; invested, instructed, and sent them out. They changed the world by His Spirit. He’s given you the same Spirit, put the same call on you…now what are you going to do?

i am so stoked on our "Identity" series, and hope you are too. Being a topical message it is my aim to remain true to the Bible as a whole and aim to dive into our specific "avenues" through chunks of scripture. With this in mind, as we proceed in unpacking God's original design of male and female, what sin has done to that design, and how we as God's chosen redeemed son's and daughters can (and should) redeem the current cultural definitions of male and female I want us to keep this reality in mind:

The Christian does not grow day by day, but Word by Word!

The "lifespan" of your faith does not determine your maturity and depth of relationship with Jesus, your time in and digesting His word determines your maturity and depth of relationship.

In all we do as a ministry through this year, it is my heart that we come under this reality. I pray that all of you immerse yourselves in God's word, His perfect love, and grow in both your understanding of God as your Father, and the presence of His Spirit moving and acting in Frequency and most notably through reading your bibles!

there are 8 "channels" to achieve eternal life, they are: individuality, family, groups, mankind, all living things, physical universe, spirits, and God. you are expected to do as much good for these groups as possible.

God exists but his identity is a matter of personal awareness and conviction. Jesus was one of many great teachers. Your job is to make the world a better place.

The more you understand about yourself and life, the better you feel.

Mormon:

Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit are 3 different Gods (polytheism). God was once a physical person, and currently He (God) has one or more wives in heaven. Jesus was once a man who became God.

Each man who is "worthy" living on earth will one day be the god of their own planet, and each woman will live on the planet of her husband. Each husband and wife can have spirit children after they're dead. Before babies are born they exist in heaven.

Jehovah's Witness:

God is called Jehovah. Jesus is God's son, but NOT God, he's inferior. Jesus died on a stake, not a cross. The earth will never be destroyed and always have people living on it. The wicked will be eternally destroyed. Only 144,000 will go to heaven. Man was created, then evolved.

You must be baptized, by immersion, in a Jehovah's Witness church to be saved. The Holy Spirit is not God, but rather an impersonal force with great intelligence.

Medicine and Doctors is not permissible.

Salvation is gained through works.

All that we have we have because God first gave it to us. What can we say that we have that was not first created through God. John 1:3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. Both in Psalm 14 and 53 David says “ The fool says in his heart, there is no God.” I wouldn’t stop there. I would go even deeper and say that the fool says in his heart they have what they have because man gave it to them, but John tells us, “all things were made through God, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” Whether it be food, a car, a house, or fill in the blank nothing at all was made without God, therefor, all that we have we have because God provided it for us.

I challenge you all to open up your Bibles this week up to psalm 50 and especially take note of verses 7-12. All things on this earth belong to God. Thats not to say we should not use them. Thats not to say that God does not want us to use them. God is our Father, and just like any dad if we were to go into our homes and fix ourselves a sandwich or parents are not going to condemn us for it, they are happy to provide us with such a meal, but we must give them thanks, just as we should give thanks to God for, not just food, but for all that He continually provides for us, even if that is only the breath inside your lungs, be thankful. Be thankful for all that God gives you, for He gives you willingly.

I challenge you all now to do your best in giving with a willing heart, without regret as God has given to us. Display the character of Christ and be graceful, give to those who don’t deserve, lend a helping hand even without being asked, and be thankful. Be thankful for all that you have, and allow God to show you how to make the best out of any situation, take those lemons the world keeps throwing at us and make yourself a sweet glass of lemonade.

An Important Message

Last night we saw that Abraham followed God (1) despite not knowing the details, (2)despite what he did know, and (3)worshiped in the face of the current culture. Abraham exemplifies a dynamic faith that first trusts, and subsequently is moved to action, based on God's word.

I raised the issue that many of us do not spend time in the word, therefore, how are we to expect to hear, follow, and truly trust God? In reading 2 Peter 1:13-2, Peter makes it very clear that the message, life, and ministry of Jesus was, and is, in fact real. Peter also acknowledges that MANY will come and MANY will pursue fabricated tales, opinions, and philosophies. Peter says that he is making every effort to ensure that the truth of God's word and the gospel is ever available to those who seek Jesus.

HOW CAN WE SAY WE LOVE AND KNOW JESUS, IF WE DO NOT ENGAGE HIM? We engage him by the reading of His word. Again, as last night, I encourage all of you to read your bible. If I lose my job because I have nothing to teach you because you all are dedicated students of Gods word...AMEN!

Read 2 Peter 3 today, let the words Peter writes resonate in your heart, and approach God honestly (He knows what your thinking anyway, so why bother with pretensions!)

James 4:6-8
God resist the proud, and gives to the humble.
Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Just before this James explains how if we are friends of the world we are enemies to God, likewise, if we resist the devil we submit to God. The devil may tempt us, but with the strength that we are given by the grace of God we can overcome him. Just as satan had quoted scripture out of context to Jesus, in hopes to divert his praise from God the father to himself, he will continuously use our past, seemingly out of context, to get us to stumble. Satan is consistently trying to take praise from God through our transgressions, but he only succeeds because he will not show us why we turned from our sin, only why we once sinned. Because it was fun. By only telling us the fun that we once had, constantly diverting our attention away from the pain that was a result to that sin. Similarly, in the garden of eden satan caused Eve to think that God was restricting her from certain things, rather than protecting her.
There is always a way out with God, there is always opportunity for success. Let not the devil tempt you, allow God to test you. By overcoming your temptations, we resist the devil, and in turn, give praise to God. Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you, has there ever been so beautiful a picture as this, a Father drawing close to His beloved children.

Hey Hey! Mall Hunt is here! Friday 11/12

Details:

Show up at OHC @6pm ready to go, make teams, review the rules and head on up to the Spectrum. Afterward we will be eating at In'N'Out (Laguna Hills) and returning to OHC @ 10:30. Leaders will transport from church...you will not need to drive.

Mall Hunt 2010 Rules

Leaders will not be helping/aiding students to the finding of hidden leaders.

All leaders, including drivers, must be outside unless they are either, ordering coffee, or

other beverage, using the facilities i.e., restrooms, or getting a snack. (Would not order food unless you are not a fan of Inn n out and do not plan on eating dinner.)

Leaders will not be hiding in stores, if for some reason they are inside you and your team must wait for them to exit the building before approaching them.

Only one person may approach a leader to get the signature, if anymore than that the leader has the right to refuse signing your slip and you will have to find them again later. Also if the leader fills like you have given them away in any way they have the right to refuse signature.

Once you have sent your person to get the signature have them hide the sign slip and the rest of your group look the other way as to having no clue there is a leader in your midst.

Be secretive, your secret agents, key word, SECRET.

Leaders will not lie or trick you, if you feel like you have address your driver whom will later address me. Those who address me with any complaints during the mall hunt will be docked 10 points (the amount for two leader signatures) and there complaint will not be taken into consideration.

All hunting ends at 8:30 p.m. If you find a leader at 8:31 p.m., they will not sign your sheet.

Meet with your drivers at the spot they designate and they will then take you to Inn n Out next to Laguna Hills Mall where complaints will be taken into in affect and winners will be decided.

Winners will receive free milkshake. Losers will make sure all trash gets into a trash can.

Step Out

We are not to walk out into the world and blend in. Too often we are afraid of what people might think if they knew that we live for God,therefor, we go out clothed in the world rather than the garments Christ gave us. Christ clothes us in the righteousness of God. For God is the light, and He shines within us so that we may go out into the world and shine onto those who do not know God.

Remember that evil hates the light and does not come to the light. Since the dark will not come to the light, the light must go out into the dark. Take the shade off of the light, and show the world who you really are rather than hiding in the shadows. Psalm 23:4 Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for you are with me. STOP BEING AFRAID; THE CREATOR OF THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH IS WITH US!

in light of our studies the past two weeks, i would like to leave you all with this...

In extreme terms (which is applicable for most of us), if someone isn't building you up, then they're bringing you down. There is no neutrality.

Surround yourself with those that will build you up, strengthen, encourage, and challenge you. You will have seasons that these things may not seem to be happening, but never under estimate the value of perseverance. As you surround yourself with those that are building you up, do not forget the call to service, the call on you to selflessness. Assure yourself that you are one that builds others, and others are sure to come along that will in turn, directly or indirectly, build you up.

So many of us came to Christ with the impression, or maybe even the expectation, that ALL of our hardships will disappear. It amazes me that either in an effort to "win" souls, and (for some) boost attendance and pad their stats, pastors will preach Jesus and invite people to come to Him under the terms that life will cease to have troubles. Maybe its not entirely the pastor's fault though. Perhaps there are those that all they hear is the "ease" and cessation of trials in a message or presentation of Jesus. This is indeed an intriguing and fascinating phenomena. ALL, and I mean everybody, wants to avoid pain, trials, troubles, etc. (if not, we have medications and therapists for such people). Now the interesting and intriguing aspect under this reality of trouble avoidance is this: we are to expect troubles (Jesus told us so), AND we are promised an eternity void of troubles.

There is a desire for the eternal (in terms of trial avoidance) in EVERYBODY'S heart (regardless of religious disposition or faith), yet this desire is for the most part inevitably and entirely self-subservient.

The amazing reality is that if you have ever heard the word of the Lord you know that it is often a bitter sweet morsel. That is to say, when God speaks (through a pastor, friend, His word, or His Spirit to your heart) it is more than occasionally hard to handle and face honestly. If you have not had this experience of a "harsh" word, then it stands to question that maybe you have never in fact heard His word. Hearing His word is difficult for the fact, like our self-subservient trial avoidance eternal desire, we naturally desire things counter-culture to the eternal kingdom of which are called and presently sealed up in.

The miraculous sweetness comes as we hear though.

As we spend time under His wing, immersed in His word, listening, waiting, and anticipating His presence even though it may be hard and "unnatural," our "nature" changes. As we abide (spend time affixed to the Lord) our present and eternal disposition changes. And ouraforementioned trial avoidance desire of our eternal trial absent promise takes on a whole new meaning and identity. Though we are promised troubles and trials, and by our nature we seek to avoid them (rightly so), as we immerse ourselves in Jesus we are not troubled by the troubles and trials when they arrive for we have the eternal in our midst in the very present here and now!

Heres the news...

our little guy was born Thursday 6/24 @ 1:52pm, weighing in at a whopping 10lbs 13onces and was 22.5" long! During delivery he suffered a broken right arm. Mamma is doing well, as I write this now, we are sitting in the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) with our little man. The Dr.'s want to keep him a few more days to run tests and make sure he is recovering strong from a "traumatic" birth. He is looking great, much like a 3 month old rather than a newborn, and we are very hopeful to bring him home by wed.! Thanks for all the prayers, Kelly and I miss you all and can't wait to introduce our lil' bruiser (nickname compliments of Alex M.) to you!

in light of Jakob's arrival our "official sign-ups" have been delayed. So, in the meantime, if you want to go on the trip (remember spots are unfortunately limited) do one of the two following steps:

2- bring a $50 deposit to the reception desk during the week with your name on the memo line.

We will be staying at Coldwater Creek campsites in Mammoth from August 5th-8th. During our trip will take two day hikes to some beautiful locations and explore some amazing landscapes. A Little Mouse

I love "The Tale of Despereaux" because of the story it tells. An odd,ostracized, little mouse, who loves adventure, and courage, and honor. From the very beginning of the story there are so many truths laid out to set the stage, yet they are so easy to miss. Statements like, "Anyone who knows anything, knows there is a big difference between a mouse and a rat. First of all, rats hate the light... If you know anything about fairy tales, then you know that a hero doesn't appear until the world really needs one...Of course, destiny is a funny thing. We go out to meet it and we don't always know that we are."

A very liberating view of life is to see it as a movie, or novel. A great story unfolding, with you in the spotlight. This may sound narcissistic, but be honest, its natural for everyone to put their needs and desires before others. This is why it is so great in the eyes of God for selfless love and action to be taken. Viewing life as a story is very much within the heart of the gospel. We have scripture, and much of it is written and recorded in narrative form, telling stories that unfold and are extremely rich and dynamic. Jesus often spoke in parables to open the eyes and hearts of his audience. The point is, story speaks the to the inner fabric of our souls, so why not see life on a whole, as an elaborate story.

Now there is one thing that hinders all great characters in any story above all; FEAR. The characters of great stories overcome the odds, and often those odds at play bring fear(s) that greatly effect the character in immense ways. With this in mind, it is crucially important to realize that all characters are created, and have an author as their creator. So, it stands to reason then, that if we are to be wise characters in our stories then we will acknowledge that we too have a creator, our author, and let him write the best possible story for us.

Our author has never called us into a safe life, in fact, he assures us of just the opposite and goes as far as to say, "if you love me, you will be hated." Once again, just as in the great stories we love to engage in, fear takes the stage. The disconnect rises within us due to the reality that we strive for safety in our story, while admiring the danger and overcoming of effectual fear in others' stories.

We are commanded "do not fear" over two-hundred times throughout scripture; yet we still do. If you read between the lines, it is explicitly obvious that Jesus greatly understands the we will be afraid. Yet, we are commanded not to fear. We are not encouraged to avoid it, we are commanded. Not only does Jesus understand that we will be afraid, He knows first hand, that the greatest stories are of those that do not give in to fear.

Donald Miller puts it this way, "I thought of fear as a subtle suggestion in our subconscious designed to keep us safe, or more important, keep us from getting humiliated. And i guess it serves that purpose. But fear isn't only a guide to keep us safe; its also a manipulative emotion that can trick us into living a boring life."

How great of a story are you living? Is it safe? Are you co-authoring with the creator, or are you going at it solo? Is your story boring?

We will have our camping trip August 5-8 in Mammoth. All the details concerning activities are still being worked out, there are permits pending regarding overnight back-pack trips, nevertheless, we will be camping, hiking, and creating a whole lot of chaotic fun! This is a "roughin" it style trip, and if you feel any hesitation in light of that, well, then all the more reason to go! This trip is geared for stepping out in adventure, challenging yourself, and creating a good story to tell.

Last night at our bonfire we talked a bit about media, our involvement with it, and our motivations for the crazy ways we use it. NOT for one second am i outright condemning such things as FaceBook, Twitter, gaming systems, and so on. The problem arises when the thinking (setting your heart upon) and engaging of such media outraces and overcomes the engaging and setting of your heart upon Jesus.

The question was raised, "do you think that anybody really cares about the details of your life that it becomes a necessity to share with everyone what you had for breakfast, how your coffee was, your plans for the rest of the day, and how many nose hairs you clipped before you set out to do such?"

As i thought about this question a bit more, fully understanding that most of us truly DO NOT care about such insidious detail of others lives, the fact is, in a twisted way, WE DO CARE. That is to say, we don't care about all those details, but we do care to know everything we can.

Some of you might not agree with that at face value, sighting the fact that you could care less about all the stuff you're supposed "know" in/for school. However, if you're anything like me, and it's precisely the reason so many magazines and shows like People and TMZ are outrageously popular, there is a desire in most everybody to know other peoples business. A desire to feel connected, informed, involved, engaged, and invested in another life. We like to know what others and doing, how they're doing it, and why.

It was said last night, "God is ALWAYS up to something." If we, if you, would create, cultivate, and fuel the same desire to "know" what God is up to in the same manner that we/you do regarding media outlets such as FaceBook, Twitter, TMZ...i assure you, that you would encounter Jesus in ways you never thought personally possible! The very reasons, desires, and longings that we chase after to be filled in such media, are the very same reasons, desires, and longings that HE DIED to fulfill.

Connect, inform, involve, engage, and invest in HIS life, and HE will surly do the same. He died to, and He's actively seeking to do so this very moment!

A few of us, and I hope it turns out to be many of us will be at the beach early and hopping in the water and just hanging out before we "get started." For those of you who don't quite know where NorthBeach/Pico is, it's quite simple. From the freeway, exit Pico, go toward the beach, and the main parking lot is right there, behind the 7-Eleven. Tomorrow night we continue our Hebrews study in ch.2. After confirming, solidifying, and esteeming the personage and deity of Jesus the author transitions with a "Therefor" statement. Ultimately he says, "therefor, knowing these truths of Jesus, DO NOT drift away like a ship unanchored at sea!"

Good morning my friends! I hope you enjoyed our look at boundaries last night...as I encouraged all of you to commit to purity, I wanted to remind you of something that was said. The statement was made, "if you aren't comfortable telling your parents what you're doing, you shouldn't be doing it."

I thought more of this statement and wanted to add this; there will be a day that a relationship will demand an honest account of history. In both spiritual and worldly endeavors we will need to answer for our decisions and who we know/knew. You wouldn't want some old, worn out, handed down gift would you? So then, why would you flirt with the possibility of allowing your heart and affections to become just that? It is my prayer that all of you would start a revolution amidst your generation by cultivating an intimate heart and relationship with Christ that overflows into all of your relationships.

This night is hosted by Transparent Productions and the cost will be $15 if you pre-pay and $18 at the door. This event is open to EVERYONE, so be sure to INVITE ALL YOUR FRIENDS!! Elevate 2009

Winter is almost here!!! That means Elevate is just around the corner. I am so excited this year. Same great place of Ogden Utah, same great snowboarding, better than anything available in California!! The food is absolutely amazing, its like eating at Claim Jumper every night, no joke. The hotel is a blast, the bus ride may be long, but the movies on the bus are awesome. It is going to be a great year no doubt. To keep the cost of the trip down, we have to limit it to 30 students. This means we will fill up, guaranteed. Spots are filled at a first come first served basis. When we hit 30 spots, we will begin a waiting list, but there is absolutely no gaurantee that those on the waiting list will have a spot on the bus. So we start taking sign ups next Sunday (October 11th) so be prepared!!!! Oh and the trip is actually cheaper than last year, pretty sweet huh!
